High King of Ireland Fort: Killaloe, Co Clare

by | May 23, 2012 | Ancient Places, Clare, Heroes & Villains, Hikes & Walks, Nature & Gardens, Scenic Spots

Brian Boru, Ireland’s last high king, was raised in Killaloe around 940. Just outside the village a serene wooded trail takes visitors to the remnants of a fort he used to control the Shannon River and Lough Derg. The circular earthenworks, now covered with trees, provides an pleasant walk and enjoyable picnic spot. The Heritage Centre in town tells the story of Brian Boru and offers more insight into local history.
