The Antiquities of Kilmalkedar: Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry

by | Jan 9, 2013 | Ancient Places, Graves, Kerry, Landmarks & Buildings, Religious Sites, Scenic Spots

Among the most significant churches on the Dingle Peninsula, this 12th Century Romanesque church reflects the builders’ efforts to modernize to more closely resemble churches in mainland Europe. Notable architectural features include a Hiberno-Romanesque doorway, blind arcading in the nave, and a chancel arch.

The site is also dotted with interesting elements reflecting its more ancient roots like an Ogham stone, sun dial, stone cross, and an alphabet stone. Of special interest are the Ogham stone with holes in them… visitors are encouraged to pledge their love or seal a deal by touching hands through an opening in the timeworn rocks.
