Aughavale Cemetery: Westport, Co Mayo

by | Jun 27, 2012 | Graves, Mayo, Religious Sites, Scenic Spots

Just outside of Westport about a mile, on the road towards Croagh Patrick and Murrisk, there is a lovely, large cemetery called Aughavale, on the left side of the road (Clew Bay is on the right). It is walled in, but do take the time to park and wander.

There are several sections, including new areas with tall celtic crosses and angel memorials. There are older sections, all but grown over with ivy and moss. There is a basement masoleum, and an overgrown ‘garden’ grave section.

It is unique in that it has both Protestant and Catholic burials within the cemetery.

If, like me, you are enamored of the beautiful, serene carvings of an Irish cemetery, you will enjoy your wander through these ancestors’ final resting places. Croagh Patrick in the background makes it even more poignant.
