A Tasty Memory at The Burren Smokehouse: Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare

by | Jul 8, 2012 | Clare, Food & Drink

Lisdoon, Lisdoon, Lisdoon, Lisdoonvarna! Every time I visit this area, this song is stuck in my head – the Christy Moore version, of course.

Lisdoonvarna is a lovely town, northeast of Doolin in County Clare. On the main road through town, there is a small smokehouse. This place is marvelous! It is full of local products, from smoked mackerel, poitin (Irish moonshine), mead, cheeses, teas, seaweed products, jellies – and of course, the usual course of gifts and souveniers.

I was lucky enough to come across some storytelling CDs my first trip there, from a local man who had passed away. What a treasure! He was a true bard.

This is a fantastic place to load up on some breakfast and snack foods, make a picnic, and support the local community.
