14th Century Carrigaphooca Castle and Stone Circle: Macroom, County Cork

by | Jul 21, 2012 | Ancient Places, Castles, Cork, Hauntings & Mysteries, Monuments

About half way between Cork and Killarney, in a field just a couple of miles outside the town of Macroom, lies the remains of Carrigaphooca Castle. The castle was built as a defensive tower back in the early 15th century, but these days it is known locally to be one of the most haunted castles in Ireland.

Nearby, you will also find the Carrigaphooca Stone Circle, which is probably one of the smaller examples of stone circles you will come across, but still a very worthwhile addition to any megalithic monument tour of Ireland.
