History Just Down the Street: Carlingford, Co Louth

by | Jun 17, 2012 | Landmarks & Buildings, Louth, Religious Sites

In the early 1300s when it was first built, this was a remote place. Paths up the mountains led off to the west and a view toward Carlingford Bay stretched to the east. These days, what remains of the Dominican Priory stands in a residential area of the town of Carlingford, next to a block of flats, just down the street from the primary school, along the road leading out of the Cooley peninsula to the nearby mainland town of Dundalk. The Priory is a popular backdrop for wedding photos these days too: perhaps the spirits of those long ago friars are adding their blessings to the happy wedding parties.
