It’s not often that you find a mix of everything that makes Ireland magical in one spot, but that is exactly what you find at Birr Castle Demense.

Historic castle- with aristocratic family still in residence. Check.

Scenic parklands.  Check.

Magnificent gardens.  Check.

World changing scientific discoveries.

What?  Not what you think of when you imagine Ireland?

The Great Telescope at Birr Castle

This was the world’s largest telescope for over 70 years. Built in the early 1940s by the Third Earl Rosse.

Ireland wasn’t called the “land of saints and scholars” for nothing, and the family of the Earls of Rosse did their fair share to boost the image of Ireland as a land of scientific discovery.  From astronomy and engineering to photography and botany, you’ll find plenty of “sneaky education” to entrance the entire family!
