Historic Pubble Cemetery: Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh

Just 6 miles from Enniskillen is the Historic Pubble Cemetery. It is thought that this place has been used as a burial ground for over 1000 years.

It is also believed St. Patrick preached at this place. Some 200 years later a wooden church was built here. This was eventually replaced with a stone building with a thatched roof, the ruins of which are next to the cemetery. After a new church was built in the village of Tempo, Pubble fell into neglect.

The earliest legible headstones to be found in the graveyard today date back to 1707. Look carefully and you will see ‘Mortality Symbols’ etched into some of these ancient headstones. The skull and cross-bone is a well known symbol for death, the coffin and the bell represent a funeral, while the hour glass represents time has run out.
