Holy Wells in Ballynakill Parish: Woodford, Co Galway

by | Jun 6, 2012 | Ancient Places, Galway, Nature & Gardens, Religious Sites

We have two holy wells still active in the Ballynakill Parish. These fall within the Woodford, Galway town boundaries.

The first is St Anne’s well and the graveyard for unbaptised children. Found turning off the Loghderg drive R352 at Gorteeny onto the parallel lane. Doubling back in the direction of Portumna the well is on the left before the junction at Hanna’s Park

The second more difficult to find is hidden in the Derrycrag Nature reserve. Enter the reserve at the main gate and continue to the first made lane to the right. Taking this lane for about 100yards you will just about make out the ancient path on the right which wanders down to the Shrine. The well 3ft deep has 4 steps leading in. At present the well is 3/4 full of leaves.
